Elon Musk has a knack for tweeting out some real eyebrow-raisers. On Wednesday afternoon, he delivered, once again:
The new Roadster will actually do something like this https://t.co/fIsTAYa4x8
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 9, 2019
So, basically a hovercraft? The internet’s immediate response:
So, is Musk just joking around?
“I’m not,” Musk replied on Twitter TWTR, +1.63% to the delight of his fan base. “Will use SpaceX cold gas thruster system with ultrahigh pressure air in a composite over-wrapped pressure vessel in place of the 2 rear seats.”
In addition, he says the car will accelerate “at the limit of human endurance” and easily cover a quarter mile in less than 8 seconds.
As one Twitter fan suggest, maybe something like this:
This isn’t the first time Musk has hinted of such a version:
SpaceX option package for new Tesla Roadster will include ~10 small rocket thrusters arranged seamlessly around car. These rocket engines dramatically improve acceleration, top speed, braking & cornering. Maybe they will even allow a Tesla to fly …
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 9, 2018
We’ll see about that.
What we do know at this point is that Tesla TSLA, +1.00% is looking to bring a new Roadster to market by 2020 as the quickest and fastest production car out there. As in, 0-60 in less than 2 seconds. The company is taking reservations for the $200,000 base version with a $50,000 deposit.
Also on Wednesday, Musk announced in a tweet that Tesla will soon stop selling its cheapest Model S and X vehicles.
“If you’d like that version, please order by Sunday night,” he said.
