New Tesla Roadster Featured On Jay Leno's Garage August 23

If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I want to be Jay Leno in my next life, and it’s not just because he has a full head of hair and I do not*. Leno has amassed one of the most amazing collections of automobiles in history, an assortment of motorized marvels that could keep any gearhead amused for decades.

Thanks to the magic of television (you have to be of a certain age to fully appreciate that remark), he shares many of those lovely creations with us on a regular basis via a show on CNBC called “Jay Leno’s Garage.” This Thursday, August 23, he will showcase the new Tesla Roadster, a transportation device that will knock the socks off just about every supercar ever created at a fraction of the cost.

Although the car is still in the design phase, its specs have been confirmed by Elon Musk on several occasions — 200 kWh battery, 620 miles of range, top speed over 250 mph, and 0–60 mph in 1.9 seconds. And that’s for the base version! Musk has hinted at a “SpaceX package” with 10 tiny rocket motors that will raise that performance level even higher — and could even allow the car to fly for brief moments. For most of us, this may be as close as we ever get to the real Tesla Roadster. Tesla chief designer Franz von Holtzhausen will be on hand to introduce Leno to the car and explain some of its state-of-the-art design features. To say the car is stunning is a gross understatement. It is drop-dead gorgeous in an “I want one so bad I would sell my soul to Elon Musk to get one” sort of way.

Engadget admits it is unlikely viewers will learn many secrets about the car during the segment, but just being able to see it from every angle in all its voluptuous glory will be worth it. Most of Jay Leno’s Garage episodes quickly make it onto Leno’s YouTube channel, and the odds are excellent this one will too so that mere mortals like us will be able to watch it over and over again.

No one actually needs a Tesla Roadster, but everyone wants one. Starting at $200,000, the first Roadsters are scheduled for production in 2020. Be the first on your block to reserve one!
